ISOBUTANE
Official label name (INCI name, EU glossary of cosmetic ingredient names), No 13669
- Prohibited above an impurity threshold (Annex II)
ISOBUTANE: Prohibited above an impurity threshold (Annex II, entry 464), under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
In plain words
What it is used for
Functions declared by manufacturers:
Propellant: generates pressure in an aerosol pack, expelling contents when the valve is opened. Some liquefied propellants can act as solvents.
What the rules say
Prohibited only if the substance contains at least 0.1% (w/w) butadiene. This content does not appear on an ingredient list.
Hazard and risk
A specific form or grade of this substance (the one described in the title of the CLP entry) is classified as carcinogenic, category 1A (known effect in humans) and mutagenic (may damage DNA), category 1B (presumed effect, established mainly from animal studies). Its other forms fall under another entry.
This classification describes what the substance can cause (a hazard), not what happens when using a product (a risk): the risk depends on the dose, the form and the route of exposure (skin, inhalation, ingestion).
