Mises en garde au Canada
- Précautions et mises en garde
Take potassium iodide (KI) only when public officials tell you. In a nuclear radiation emergency, radioactive iodine could be released into the air. KI protects only the thyroid gland from uptake of radioactive iodine. Therefore, KI should be used along with other emergency measures that will be recommended to you by public officials, such as taking shelter indoors, evacuating or relocating from the affected area or avoiding contaminated foods or food products. If you are told to take this medicine, take it only once in a 24 hour period. Do not take it more often or at higher dose than directed by a health care authority. More will not help you and may increase the risk of serious side effects. Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. If pregnant or breastfeeding, for baby under 1 month of age or if you have thyroid disease (except nodular thyroid disease with heart disease), take as directed above and contact a doctor as soon as possible. Ensure that thyroid functions are checked by a health care practitioner in babies less than 1 month of age that take KI. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and patient with thyroid disease other than nodular thyroid disease with heart disease should also be checked by a doctor if repeat dosing is necessary. This product is not intended for nutritional use. Some people may experience sialadenitis (an inflammation of the salivary glands), gastrointestinal disturbance or temporary rash. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a health care practitioner. Breastfed infants should receive their dose of KI by direct administration and should not rely on a protective effect from breast milk. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have Grave's disease or autoimmune thyroiditis. Serious risks may be associated wit the repeated use of this product. Repeated doses should be supervised by a health care practitioner. This product is not intended for use as a generic anti-radiation drug. It is only effective for specific use during radioiodine exposure.
- Contre-indications
Do not use if you are allergic to iodine. Do not use if you have nodular thyroid disease with heart disease. Do not use if you have hypocomplementemic vasculitis. Do not use if you have dermatitis herpetiformis. Do not use if you have iodine sensitivity, or past or present history of hyperthyroidism.
- Effets indésirables connus
If you have swelling of the hands or feet, fever or joint pain, discontinue use and call a doctor. Discontinue use and get medical help right away if you have an allergic reaction, trouble breathing, speaking or swallowing; shortness of breath; wheezing; swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat; or rash, or in case of irregular heartbeat or chest pain.
